Named after the English town of the same name, Tamworth, lies at the junction of the Oxley and New England Highways in northern New South Wales is the commercial centre of the Peel Valley and one of the state's key regional centres. It is commonly referred to as the country music capital of Australia as each year in January, Tamworth hosts the Australasian Country Music Awards which attracts thousands of visitors. Also in the area are the Big Golden Guitar to the city's south, Lake Keepit - 50km west is a popular water skiing and boating haven, the Power Station Museum, Oxley Marsupial Reserve, various galleries and walks as well as the magnificent Oxley Scenic Lookout which lies at the summit of the mountain directly behind Tamworth.
