General Information:
A6 is a collection of local roads that form one large route, which is one of Sydney's major arterial roads.
The
route is mostly suburban arterial standard. At the southern end around
Lucas Heights through to Heathcote, it's mostly 2 to 3 lane single
carrigeway. The rest of the route is mostly 4 to 6 lanes divided,
however some of the route is 4 lane undivided around the northern end
and in the Bankstown area.
History:
- 1940
to 1943: Construction of Heathcote Road (then IlIawarra Road) primarily
for military use. Some minor local roads built before the Heathcote
Road works, were upgraded as part of the project. 1
- 10 November 1962: The
Silverwater Bridge, which is a five span pre-stressed bridge that crosses the Parramatta River, opened.
It was the first concrete box girder bridge built in NSW. 1

September 1973 : Alfords Point Bridge opened, replacing a vehicular
punt that operated between Lugarno and Illawong. At the time the
existing bridge was built, the piles and abutments for a second bridge
were also constructed. 1
- 1989: To address peak traffic flows, a tidal traffic flow arrangement was
implemented on Alfords Point Road. 1
- 1991: Alfords Point
Road was extended as a four lane road from Brushwood Drive to Old Illawarra Road,
Menai to provide for growth in Menai. 1
- 1997: Davies Road was upgraded from two to
four lanes from Alma Road to Banks Street, Padstow. 1
- June 1999: Opening to traffic of a four-lane link road between Rookwood Road
and Hume Highway at Stacey Street intersection. 1
- 2005: Construction of the Bangor Bypass and of the North/South link between
the intersection of Alfords Point Road and Old Illawarra Road, Menai. 1
- 16
December 2005: Metroad 6 extended from Marsden Road at Carlingford and
replacing Metroad 7 along Pennant Hills Road to the Hills Motorway
interchange. Signage updated on 21 December 2005. 2
- February 2007: Work commenced to duplicate Alfords Point Bridge over
the Georges River between Alfords Point and Padstow Heights. 1
- 22 August 2008: New Alfords Point Bridge temporarily opened to traffic. 2
- 2011: Upgrade of the Alfords Point Bridge northern approach. 3
- August 2012: Speed limit change from 70 km/h to 80 km/h on New Illawarra Road at Lucas Heights. 4
- 2013: Metroad 6 decommissioned and replaced by A6.
- January 2013: Noise walls installed on Heathcote Road adjacent to Odean Place from Rialto Place to Forum Drive at Heathcote. 5
- July 2013: Work commences on installation of pedestrian signals on the Amy St side of Joseph St in Regents Park. 6
- March 2015: Work commences on improvements at Pennant Hills Road and Marsden Road, Carlingford. The upgrade included extending the two right turn lanes from Pennant Hills Road northbound into Marsden Road, extending the two right turn lanes from Pennant Hills Road northbound into Carlingford Road, providing a new dedicated left turn lane from Marsden Road westbound into Pennant Hills Road, providing a new southbound bus lane on Pennant Hills Road, south of Marsden Road, realigning the southbound lanes on Pennant Hills Road. 7 Upgrade commences on Alfords Point Road, Menai and included duplicating the left turn lane from Alfords Point Road into Menai Road, construction of a retaining wall on the eastern side of Alfords Point Road, installation of new drains and drainage pits, adjustment of underground utilities and street lights, construction of new kerb and gutter and a pedestrian island, extension of the existing concrete footpath, adjustment of and installation of new traffic light posts, realignment of the existing pedestrian crossing on the eastern side of the intersection and placement of new line marking. 8
- December 2015: Work started on permanently restricting the right turn from Stacey Street into Griffiths Avenue with a concrete median and also safety improvements around the median at the intersection of Stacey Street service road and South Terrace as well as new line marking and signs. 9
- March 2016: Work started on widening Alfords Point Road between Georges River and Brushwood Drive from two lanes to three lanes in each direction. The project included improving traffic flow to and from Brushwood Drive on and off-ramps by using the new lanes, provision of a central barrier to improve safety by dividing the northbound and southbound carriageways, relocation of the northbound bus bay on Alfords Point Road on-ramp near Eucalyptus Street, to a location around 100 metres to the south, provision of a new road surface and improved drainage system, provision of a breakdown bay along the southbound carriageway located around midway between the Georges River and Brushwood Drive, relocation of the Heavy Vehicle Inspection Station on the southbound carriageway to beneath the Old Illawarra Road bridge, around 900 metres south of Brushwood Drive, realignment of the pedestrian path on the eastern side of Alfords Point Road, adjustment of the existing noise walls and providing a new noise wall along the route and provision of cycleway access from Alfords Point Road. 3
- August 2016: Completion of upgrade works at the corner of Pennant Hills Rd & Marsden Rd at Carlingford. 7
- March 2017: Installation of two permanent electronic message signs on Heathcote Road, Lucas Heights. The signs were installed 375 metres north of the intersection of New Illawarra Road, to provide eastbound road users with advance notice of incidents on the Princes Highway, and 235 metres south of the intersection of New Illawarra Road, to provide westbound road users with advance notice of incidents on the M5 Motorway. 10
- June 2018: Work begins on upgrade to the intersection of Heathcote Rd and New Illawarra Rd at Lucas Heights, and included widening of New Illawarra Road to provide additional right and left turn lanes to reduce queuing for traffic trying to turn onto Heathcote Road. Traffic lights also installed for motorists turning left from New Illawarra Road, heading south towards Engadine. Work also started on widening Heathcote Road on the approach to the Princes Highway, to include two dedicated right turn lanes onto the Princes Highway and a new shared through and right turning lane. 11
- October 2018: Work starts on widening Stacey Street between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street to provide three southbound lanes. Also extension of the existing dual right turn bay on Stacey Street for road users turning right into Macauley Avenue. 12
