South Australia: Victor Harbor
Incorporating photos and Information from Michael Greenslade's former Australian Towns, Cities and Highways site

Victor Harbor, a thriving town on the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula is a popular holiday and tourist destination and South Australia's fastest growing regional centre. Once a possible location for South Australia's capital city (Port Lincoln was also considered), the town was established in the late 1830's as a whaling port. The harbour was further developed with the addition of the railway line in the late 1800's however eventually became defunct as the whaling and port operations wound down at the turn of the century.

Since Victor Harbor is essentially the state's most popular coastal location behind Adelaide, the town offers plenty for the tourist. Aside from the lengths of popular and safe surf beaches, there are excellent shopping & sporting facilities in town with plenty of motels & accommodation as the town can swell to over 50,000 people in the summer months. Highlights include Granite Island (which features the horse drawn tram across the jetty spanning it and the mainland) and The Bluff (protruding hill to the south of the town), both of volcanic origin and of which stand out to the motorist when entering the town. Also in town is Greenhills Park, a small family fun park with several attractions, the Cockle Train which runs between Victor Harbor and nearby Goolwa on a section of the original railway line and the Urimbirra Fauna Park (8km north). The town itself has several historical buildings, excellent foreshore parks and picnic areas and a colourful & busy CBD.
