General Information:

Alternative National Route 1 was a collection of separate roads in different parts of South Australia that paralleled National Route 1 or offered a different route to the same destinations, but in the case of Callington to Murray Bridge, the route is the former NR1 routing. This section of ALT-NR1 is the old Princes Highway route linking the Big River Country town of Murray Bridge with Adelaide, via the Adelaide Hills district. The importance of the route diminished with the opening of the South Eastern Fwy.

History:

1920s: The Princes Highway was first proclaimed from Sydney to Melbourne, it was later extended through western Victoria and eventually to Adelaide.
1938: Mount Barker Rd renamed Princes Hwy. 1
1950s: Duplication of highway between Glen Osmond and Crafers. 1
1955: The route from the Vic-SA Border to Tailem Bend was fully sealed, National Route 1 shield implemented. 1
1998: ALT-NR1 decommissioned and replaced by B55 with the implementation of alphanumeric route numbering.
Post-1998 photos presented below are remnants, missed during alphanumeric conversion.
