General Information:

Yarra Glen is a grade separated parkway standard route linking the Woden Valley with South Canberra.

Acting as a continuation of Adelaide Av (TD5), the route was built to provide access to Canberra's first satellite town centre. The route passes through mostly residential areas, and is designed to be widened and also features the Cotter Rd (TD5) interchange which has had the provision for southbound ramps included in its construction. Yarra Glen also includes a Transit Lane for part of its length, in both directions.

History:

1966: Construction begins on stage one of Woden Parkway. 1
30 September 1966: Official name of Yarra Glen announced for the route. The road was named after the Yarra Glen homestead owned by early European settlers in the area, the Campbell family. 2
22 November 1967: The first section of Yarra Glen, the Woden Expressway, opened to traffic. With a speed limit of 45 MPH, it was then Canberra's fastest road. The 1.5 mile section of road extended from Adelaide Avenue, near Deakin Oval, to the Carruthers Street overpass in Curtin. 3
21 December 1967: The extension of Yarra Glen between Carruthers Street and Melrose Drive opened to traffic. 4
November 1968: Yarra Glen at the Cotter Road overpass lowered by three feet after it was found that inadequate clearance had been allowed for trucks. 5
2 July 1969: Traffic lights at the Carruthers Street-Yarra Glen overpass intersection switched on. 6
August 1969: Scaffolding on the Cotter Road overpass removed. 7
June 1971: The contract to build the Woden traffic interchange, a "roundabout" 700ft in diameter to replace a T-intersection at Yarra Glen and Melrose and Yamba Drives, let to Leighton Contractors Ltd. Scope of works also included the construction of two high-level bridges and the lining of Yarralumla Creek straightened and finished. 8
November 1971: Girders placed in position for the bridge section of the Yarra Glen flyover near the intersection of Melrose and Yamba Drives. The bridge spanned a stormwater drain in which seven people were drowned in floods on January 26, 1971. 9
April 1972: One bridge of the Yamba Drive / Melrose Drive roundabout opened to traffic. 10
28 April 1972: Second city bound lane near Yamba Drive / Melrose Drive roundabout opened to traffic. 11
22 August 1972: The second of two high level bridges over Yarralumla Creek opened to traffic. 12
November 1974: Construction of Bus Lanes on Yarra Glen. 13 The lanes were the first of their kind in the ACT. 14
March 1975: Opening of Bus Lanes on Yarra Glen. 14
1977: Street lighting installed on Yarra Glen between Cotter Rd and Carruthers St. 15
