Over 328 million people live in the United States of America, including Alaska and Hawaii, which are located away from most states.
The road network is split into several heirarchies. Generally speaking, the Interstate system, the National Highway System and State Routes. Many states even drill down further to include County Routes.
Looking at the 2 route numbering systems used nationally, the National Highway System (US routes) covers 259 032 kilometres (160 955 miles) and the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways (Interstates) covers 75 439 kilometres (46 876 miles).
