Introduced in 1956, the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, also known as the Interstate Highway System, is a network of controlled-access highways that forms part of the National Highway System within the United States. In California there is a total of 6 interstate routes plus 21 auxilary interstate routes, with plans for more routes to be added. Interstates in California are administered for the Federal Highway Administration by Caltrans, the state government department that overseas a number of transport systems throughout the state.
