Established in 1839, Echunga is located in the Adelaide Hills. Gold was discovered in the area in 1852 and Echunga became the first proclaimed goldfield in South Australia.
Prior to the arrival of Europeans the area was home to people from the Kaurna Aboriginal language group. The name of the town was derived from the Kaurna word Ityangga, meaning "over there" or "close by".
