New South Wales: Broken Hill
Incorporating photos and Information from Michael Greenslade's former Australian Towns, Cities and Highways site

New South Wales' most remote city, Broken Hill is a world famous mining centre that lies at the junction of the Barrier and Silver City Highways and amongst the Barrier Ranges. While created solely for the mining of silver, lead and zinc in the 1890's, the city's mining operations have wound down since the start, however retains a strong interest for tourists because of the mining history, tours, extensive historic buildings & icons and because of the surprisingly scenic outback surroundings. Even though the city resides in NSW, it's interests are mainly with South Australia, with its produce transported for processing at Port Pirie and Adelaide, and operating on South Australian time.

Broken Hill is named after a nearby "broken" hill that was noted by Charles Sturt on an expedition into northern SA and NSW.
