Route Numbering:

General Information:

National Highway 39 is a short but major highway in Southern Queensland, linking with 4 other route numbers, all of which belong to highways.

The route is signposted as NH39, allegedly to provide continuity with NH39 in New South Wales.

The route once passed directly through the Goondiwindi CBD, replaced by ALT-SR39 when the route was shifted to the current Leichhardt Hwy (Boundary Rd) alignment, which bypasses the CBD to the north of the town.

The former route also includes the Border Bridge over the Macintyre River, which was the original main road from NSW into Goondiwindi. Alongside the bridge is Customs House, which was built to service the customs checkpoint on the Goondiwindi side of the bridge, Customs House was used to collect the tax paid on goods crossing between Queensland and New South Wales. 2
